The exhaust hose on my portable AC heats up the room instead of venting outside
Home Nura guide — category: Portable Air Conditioners
Diagnosis
A portable air conditioner's hose feels hot because it carries the heat removed from your room, and if it is leaking, kinked or uninsulated, part of that heat returns indoors. The most common cause is a loose connection or a gap at the window kit, so check the airflow path first.
Possible causes
- Loose hose connection — hot air escapes at the unit or window adapter, and you can feel warm air around the joints.
- Gaps in the window seal — warm outdoor air is drawn back in, and you can feel a draft around the panel.
- Kinked or overly long hose — airflow is restricted, the hose gets very hot and radiates heat into the room.
- Single-hose design — the unit pulls room air out, so warm air from other rooms is drawn in through doors and cracks.
Recommended steps
- 1Switch the unit off and unplug it, then let the hose cool down before touching it or changing any connection.
- 2Check both hose ends are fully clicked or screwed in, at the unit and at the window adapter, with no visible gaps.
- 3Shorten and straighten the hose as much as possible, avoiding sharp bends, so hot air leaves quickly and the motor does not overheat.
- 4Seal gaps around the window with the supplied panel plus foam strip or weatherstripping so outdoor air cannot flow back in.
- 5Close doors and windows in the room, clean the filter, and consider a purpose-made insulating sleeve to reduce heat radiating from the hose.
Repair or replace?
If the hose, seals and filter are all fine and the room still warms up, the unit may be undersized or its cooling circuit may be weakening; an older single-hose model is rarely worth repairing compared with a modern, more efficient replacement.

Frequently asked questions
Usually, yes, if the failure shows up during the warranty period and isn't caused by misuse. A product in the Portable Air Conditioners category bought new from an authorized retailer normally comes with a manufacturer's warranty: check its length in the manual or on the brand's website. Consumer protection rules also vary by province and territory, so keep your proof of purchase.
If you're still within the store's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, the manufacturer's warranty takes over: its customer support can arrange a repair or a replacement. Even outside the warranty, the manufacturer can often repair the device for a fee. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.
Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in the Portable Air Conditioners category whose recurring failures are documented in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never tops our rankings, whatever the brand.
Generally, yes. Routine maintenance, such as cleaning, replacing a gasket or recalibrating, is part of normal use and doesn't usually affect your warranty. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems. For a product in the Portable Air Conditioners category, stick to the steps described in the manufacturer's manual and read the warranty terms before going any further.
When a product fails in its first few months of normal use, the cause is usually a manufacturing defect. Contact the seller or the manufacturer with your proof of purchase and a description of the symptom: for a model in the Portable Air Conditioners category that is still under warranty, this is the typical case for a free repair or replacement. Warranty terms vary by brand, so read yours.
