My portable air conditioner is leaking water
Home Nura guide — category: Portable Air Conditioners
Diagnosis
A portable air conditioner that leaks water is usually badly positioned, or has a full condensate tank or a poorly connected drain hose. Switch it off, unplug it and check its tilt, the tank and the hose before looking for anything else.
Possible causes
- Condensate tank full — water overflows at the base, particularly in humid weather, and the unit may show a tank-full message.
- Unit tilted or standing on an uneven floor — water collects to one side and runs outside the collection area.
- Drain hose kinked, blocked or loosely attached — water stays in the hose and then drips at the connector or the bottom of the unit.
- Dirty filter or blocked intake grille — the evaporator ices up then thaws, producing more water than the tank can handle.
- Drain plug or seal not put back properly — a steady leak appears at the bottom of the casing after manual draining.
Recommended steps
- 1Switch the unit off, unplug it and mop up the floor so there is no slipping risk or water near the plug.
- 2Stand the unit upright on a level floor with clear space around it, and make sure it was not laid on its side during transport.
- 3Empty the condensate tank through the drain plug with a container underneath, then put the plug and its seal back correctly.
- 4Check the drain hose: no kinks, a continuous downward slope, a firmly pushed-on connector and an outlet leading to a suitable drain.
- 5Wash the filter in lukewarm water, let it dry, put it back and clear dust from the intake grilles.
- 6Run the unit for a short time and watch the floor; if water returns, note where it comes from before contacting support.
Repair or replace?
If water comes from an internal point while the tank, hose, filter and setup are all correct, a circuit or joint fault is likely and cannot be fixed at home. On an older unit, replacing it is usually cheaper than a technician's service call.

Frequently asked questions
Usually, yes, if the failure shows up during the warranty period and isn't caused by misuse. A product in the Portable Air Conditioners category bought new from an authorized retailer normally comes with a manufacturer's warranty: check its length in the manual or on the brand's website. Consumer protection rules also vary by province and territory, so keep your proof of purchase.
If you're still within the store's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, the manufacturer's warranty takes over: its customer support can arrange a repair or a replacement. Even outside the warranty, the manufacturer can often repair the device for a fee. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.
Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in the Portable Air Conditioners category whose recurring failures are documented in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never tops our rankings, whatever the brand.
Generally, yes. Routine maintenance, such as cleaning, replacing a gasket or recalibrating, is part of normal use and doesn't usually affect your warranty. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems. For a product in the Portable Air Conditioners category, stick to the steps described in the manufacturer's manual and read the warranty terms before going any further.
When a product fails in its first few months of normal use, the cause is usually a manufacturing defect. Contact the seller or the manufacturer with your proof of purchase and a description of the symptom: for a model in the Portable Air Conditioners category that is still under warranty, this is the typical case for a free repair or replacement. Warranty terms vary by brand, so read yours.
