Troubleshooting

The compressor on my portable AC cuts out and restarts every two minutes

Home Nura guide — category: Portable Air Conditioners

Severity: moderate

Diagnosis

A portable air conditioner whose compressor stops and restarts every two minutes is almost always overheating or being fooled by its temperature sensor, usually because of a clogged filter or a restricted exhaust hose. These simple causes are worth fixing before suspecting the refrigerant circuit.

Possible causes

  • Clogged filter or grille — airflow is poor, the unit overheats and its thermal protection keeps switching the compressor off.
  • Kinked or blocked exhaust hose — heat cannot escape, pressure rises and the unit trips into a protective shutdown.
  • Misled temperature sensor — cold air from the unit hits the probe, so the target temperature seems reached far too soon.
  • Full condensate tank or stuck float switch — the unit pauses briefly then restarts without ever settling into steady cooling.

Recommended steps

  1. 1Unplug the unit and wait at least thirty minutes so the thermal protection resets and the refrigerant pressures can settle.
  2. 2Remove the filter, wash it in lukewarm water, dry it completely, then gently dust the air intake and outlet grilles.
  3. 3Check the exhaust hose is short, straight and firmly connected, and that its outdoor opening is not blocked by a shutter or blind.
  4. 4Move the unit away from walls and curtains, keep it clear of heat sources, and empty the condensate tank or drain hose.
  5. 5Lower the set temperature by several degrees or try another mode and see whether the run cycles lengthen; if not, contact the manufacturer's support team.

Repair or replace?

If short cycling continues after full maintenance, low refrigerant or a worn compressor is likely; both need a qualified technician and often cost more than an older unit is worth, so replacement is usually the sensible choice.

Frequently asked questions

Usually, yes, if the failure shows up during the warranty period and isn't caused by misuse. A product in the Portable Air Conditioners category bought new from an authorized retailer normally comes with a manufacturer's warranty: check its length in the manual or on the brand's website. Consumer protection rules also vary by province and territory, so keep your proof of purchase.

If you're still within the store's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, the manufacturer's warranty takes over: its customer support can arrange a repair or a replacement. Even outside the warranty, the manufacturer can often repair the device for a fee. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.

Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in the Portable Air Conditioners category whose recurring failures are documented in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never tops our rankings, whatever the brand.

Generally, yes. Routine maintenance, such as cleaning, replacing a gasket or recalibrating, is part of normal use and doesn't usually affect your warranty. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems. For a product in the Portable Air Conditioners category, stick to the steps described in the manufacturer's manual and read the warranty terms before going any further.

When a product fails in its first few months of normal use, the cause is usually a manufacturing defect. Contact the seller or the manufacturer with your proof of purchase and a description of the symptom: for a model in the Portable Air Conditioners category that is still under warranty, this is the typical case for a free repair or replacement. Warranty terms vary by brand, so read yours.
