The smart kitchen, compared as rigorously as our air fryers

Multicookers, coffee makers, scales, thermometers, smart plugs — one method, one standard.

After combing through air fryers, we apply the same rigorous scoring framework to the wider ecosystem: devices that cook, weigh, measure and switch things on from across the room. The goal: cut out the gadgets and keep what actually makes daily life easier.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, for small and medium portions an air fryer usually uses less electricity than a conventional oven, because its compact chamber heats up quickly and needs little preheating. For large batches or big dishes, the oven is still the better tool. Check the wattage on the spec sheet and compare it with the actual cooking time.

Aim for roughly 3 to 4 litres (about 3 to 4 quarts) for one or two people and 5 to 6 litres (about 5 to 6 quarts) for a family of three or four. Beyond that, a dual-basket model lets you cook two foods at once. A basket that's too small forces you to cook in batches, which cancels out the time and energy savings.

No, most smart kitchen appliances can also be run manually; Wi-Fi mainly adds guided recipes, notifications and firmware updates. Before you buy, check which functions still work offline and read the app's privacy policy to see what data it collects.

Yes, as long as the smart plug is rated for more power than the appliance draws, which is printed in watts on its label. High-draw items such as kettles and air fryers often need a plug rated for the full 15 A (1,800 W) that a standard 120 V outlet provides. Avoid leaving a heating appliance running unattended, even when you control it remotely.

A multicooker is more versatile: it typically combines pressure cooking, slow cooking, sautéing and steaming in one pot, whereas a slow cooker only cooks gently over several hours. Choose a multicooker if you want fast and varied meals, and a slow cooker if stews are all you need and you want to spend less.
