The red warning light on my air purifier stays on all the time

Home Nura guide — category: Air Purifiers

Severity: moderate

Diagnosis

A permanent red light on an air purifier most often means the sensor detects poor air quality, or that a filter-replacement reminder has not been reset. The meaning varies by model, so check the manual before assuming a fault.

Possible causes

  • Genuinely polluted air — cooking smoke, dust or aerosols make the sensor show its alert colour until the air has cleared.
  • Filter reminder not reset — the usage counter stays active even after a replacement if the reset was not carried out.
  • Dirty particle sensor — dust on the sensor skews the reading and keeps a poor air quality indication showing.
  • Filter or cover seated badly — the unit detects an assembly fault and keeps the warning light on.

Recommended steps

  1. 1Unplug the unit, open the cover and check that the filter is installed correctly and facing the right way, then close the cover properly.
  2. 2Check the manual for what the red light means on your model, its alert colour and how to reset the filter indicator.
  3. 3With the unit unplugged, vacuum or dust the pre-filter, then clean the sensor with a dry cotton swab or soft brush.
  4. 4Ventilate the room, remove nearby sources of pollution such as smoke or aerosols, and run the unit on a high speed for a few hours.
  5. 5After installing a new filter, reset the counter following the manual, often by holding a dedicated button for a few seconds.

Repair or replace?

If the light stays red after a filter change, sensor cleaning and a reset, the control board or sensor has probably failed. When filters are no longer available or the unit is old and noisy, replacing it makes more sense.

Frequently asked questions

Usually, yes, if the failure shows up during the warranty period and isn't caused by misuse. A product in the Air Purifiers category bought new from an authorized retailer normally comes with a manufacturer's warranty: check its length in the manual or on the brand's website. Consumer protection rules also vary by province and territory, so keep your proof of purchase.

If you're still within the store's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, the manufacturer's warranty takes over: its customer support can arrange a repair or a replacement. Even outside the warranty, the manufacturer can often repair the device for a fee. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.

Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in the Air Purifiers category whose recurring failures are documented in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never tops our rankings, whatever the brand.

Generally, yes. Routine maintenance, such as cleaning, replacing a gasket or recalibrating, is part of normal use and doesn't usually affect your warranty. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems. For a product in the Air Purifiers category, stick to the steps described in the manufacturer's manual and read the warranty terms before going any further.

When a product fails in its first few months of normal use, the cause is usually a manufacturing defect. Contact the seller or the manufacturer with your proof of purchase and a description of the symptom: for a model in the Air Purifiers category that is still under warranty, this is the typical case for a free repair or replacement. Warranty terms vary by brand, so read yours.
