Best Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner for Pets 2026: 3 Models Compared

Pet accidents rarely happen on the kitchen tile. They land on the area rug, the stairs or the sofa, where a mop can't reach into the fibres. A carpet and upholstery cleaner sprays water and formula into the pile, scrubs it, then sucks the dirty liquid back into a separate tank. We compared three models based on manufacturer specifications and cross-checked each model number on its Amazon listing: two portable spot cleaners (BISSELL Little Green Max Pet 3860B and Shark StainStriker PX202BRN) and one upright that handles whole rooms as well as spots (Shark CarpetXpert with StainStriker EX200C).

Quick answer

For most pet owners: the BISSELL Little Green Max Pet 3860B. It has the clearest specs of the three (two tanks of about 950 mL each, a hose of about 1.5 m and a cord of about 4.6 m), a self-cleaning stain tool and a pet hair tool, and BISSELL designs it around urine and vomit cleanup.

For set-in stains and odours: the Shark StainStriker PX202BRN, if you're happy to keep two Shark formulas on hand.

For wall-to-wall carpet plus spot stains: the Shark CarpetXpert with StainStriker EX200C, an upright deep carpet cleaner with a built-in handheld stain tool.

Spot cleaner or upright carpet cleaner?

All three are extractors: they spray, scrub and suck the water back out. The difference is scale.

  • Portable spot cleaner (Little Green Max Pet, StainStriker): a small corded unit with a hose and a hand tool. You carry it to the mess. It's the right tool for accidents, stairs, upholstery, pet beds and car seats, but it's far too slow for a whole room.
  • Upright carpet cleaner (CarpetXpert EX200C): you push it like a vacuum, with a brush roll and a wide cleaning path (25.4 cm, or 10 in., on the EX200C). It deep-cleans wall-to-wall carpet and large rugs. The EX200C also has a built-in handheld stain tool, so it covers both jobs, but it takes more storage space and weighs more.

Rule of thumb: if your carpet is mostly area rugs and the problem is accidents, a spot cleaner is enough. If whole carpeted rooms look dull or smell of pets, an upright makes more sense.

Not a wet dry vacuum or steam mop: what's the difference?

These machines are built for soft surfaces: carpet, rugs, upholstery and fabric. They don't compete with wet dry vacuums or steam mops, which are made for sealed hard floors, so we don't rank them against each other.

  • Wet dry vacuums (hard floor cleaners) scrub tile, vinyl and sealed wood with a wet roller and pick up the dirty water. They aren't designed to push solution into carpet pile or upholstery and pull it back out.
  • Steam mops clean hard floors with steam. Some come with a carpet glider for a light refresh, but that isn't extraction: nothing pulls urine out of the fibres.
  • Carpet and upholstery cleaners do the opposite job: they wet the fibres with water and formula, then extract it. They can pick up a spill, but they aren't meant to wash a whole hard floor.

If your pet's accidents mostly happen on tile or vinyl, a wet dry vacuum or a mop is the better buy. If they happen on the rug or the couch, a carpet and upholstery cleaner is the right tool.

Head to head: Little Green Max Pet vs StainStriker vs CarpetXpert

  • Tanks. BISSELL lists a 32 oz (about 950 mL) clean water tank and a 32 oz dirty water tank, kept separate so you always spray fresh solution. Shark's Canadian pages don't list tank capacities for the StainStriker or the CarpetXpert, so check the manual if tank size matters to you.
  • Reach. Hose: about 1.5 m (4.8 ft) on the BISSELL vs 1.31 m (4.3 ft) on the StainStriker. Cord: about 4.6 m (15 ft) vs 3.66 m (12 ft). The upright EX200C has a 6.1 m (20 ft) cord and a handheld tool that extends for stairs and upholstery.
  • Tools. BISSELL includes a Self-Cleaning Tough Stain Tool and a Specialized Pet Hair Removal Tool. Shark's base StainStriker comes with a 9 cm (3.5 in.) hand tool with reversible bristles and an integrated crevice tool, and Shark lists 177 mL (6 oz) of Deep Clean Pro and 355 mL (12 oz) of OXY Multiplier in the box. The PX202BRN's Amazon listing title names four tools: 9 cm (3.5 in.) and 18 cm (7 in.) stain tools, a crevice tool and a pet mess tool. The EX200C comes with a 9 cm (3.5 in.) tool on top of its built-in stain remover.
  • Formulas. BISSELL pairs the machine with its PET PRO OXY Spot & Stain formula with urine eliminator. Shark's StainStriker system mixes two Shark formulas inside the hand tool (StainStriker OXY Multiplier and CarpetXpert Deep Clean Pro), so you need both bottles.
  • Heat. None of the three heats water. BISSELL says the Little Green Max Pet has no internal heater and recommends warm, not boiling, tap water. Shark's Canadian pages don't list a heater for either model.
  • Weight. Little Green Max Pet: 3.7 kg (8.2 lb). StainStriker: Shark's Canadian page gives two figures, under 4.1 kg (9 lb) in its feature list and 5.58 kg (12.3 lb) in its spec table. CarpetXpert EX200C: 10.3 kg (22.7 lb) listed weight, so plan floor space in a closet rather than a shelf.
  • Self-cleaning. Of these three, only the BISSELL lists a self-cleaning feature: its stain tool flushes out residue after you've picked up a mess.
  • Manufacturer claims. BISSELL says the Little Green Max Pet has 30% more suction than the Shark StainStriker, based on its own ASTM F558 air-power measurement. Shark claims 20X more stain-striking power for its dual-activated formula. Both are marketing claims, not independent tests.

Pet messes: how to get the best results

  • Urine: act fast, before it soaks into the underlay. Make one pass with the spray on, then one with the spray off to pull out moisture, and repeat until the area is clean. That's the method BISSELL describes for the Little Green Max Pet.
  • Vomit and solids: pick up solids first with paper towel or a scraper, then extract what's left in the fibres.
  • Odours: use the pet formula your machine is designed for (both brands use oxygen-based pet formulas). Old urine that reached the pad may need several treatments. If the smell keeps coming back, the underlay itself may need professional cleaning or replacement.
  • Hair: vacuum first. A spot cleaner isn't a vacuum, and loose hair slows it down. BISSELL includes a pet hair tool; for heavy shedding on wall-to-wall carpet, an upright built for pet hair, such as Shark's CarpetXpert HairPro Pet with StainStriker (EX301C), is the better fit.
  • Don't over-wet: extra dry passes shorten drying time. Run a fan or open a window, especially in a damp basement, and keep pets off until the area is dry.
  • Test first: try a hidden spot and check the care label, especially on wool, silk and delicate upholstery.

What to check before you buy

  • Where the messes happen. Rugs, stairs, sofa or car: a portable spot cleaner. Whole carpeted rooms: an upright.
  • Tank size. Bigger tanks mean fewer trips to the sink. Separate clean and dirty tanks keep dirty water out of the spray.
  • Hose and cord length. A longer hose helps on stairs and in the car; a longer cord means fewer outlet changes.
  • Tools. A narrow tool for stains, a wider one for upholstery and a pet hair or pet mess tool if you have a heavy shedder.
  • Formula refills. You'll keep buying formula. Shark's StainStriker system needs two Shark formulas; BISSELL sells its own pet formulas too. Check refill costs before you choose a system.
  • Storage. A portable fits on a closet shelf; an upright needs floor space.
  • Warranty. On its Canadian site, Shark lists a 3-year limited warranty for the base StainStriker (PX200C) and a 5-year limited warranty for the CarpetXpert EX200C. BISSELL links its warranty guide from the product page.

About the model numbers

Model numbers vary by country and by seller, so always match the number on the listing.

  • BISSELL Little Green Max Pet 3860B: the model on BISSELL's Canadian site and on the Amazon listing. BISSELL lists the 3857, 3857F and 3860B as similar models.
  • Shark StainStriker PX202BRN: the version on Amazon. Its listing title names four tools (including a pet mess tool) and full-size formulas. Shark's Canadian site doesn't list the PX202BRN; it lists the base StainStriker as the PX200C. The hose, cord, power, weight and warranty figures in this guide are Shark's PX200C specs, so check the box contents on the listing.
  • Shark CarpetXpert with StainStriker EX200C: the model on Shark's Canadian site and on the Amazon listing. Shark's Canadian site also sells the CarpetXpert HairPro Pet with StainStriker (EX301C), which adds pet hair and pet mess extractors and on-board self-cleaning for the tool and hose. The Amazon listing we found for it (EX301) was a renewed unit, so it isn't one of our picks.

How we compared

We compared the specifications published on BISSELL's and SharkNinja's Canadian websites and cross-checked each model number on its Amazon listing. Amazon listing specs are often wrong (one listing shows an 8 oz capacity for the Little Green Max Pet), so every figure in this guide comes from the manufacturer. Where a manufacturer doesn't publish a figure, we say so instead of estimating it. We don't test products ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

Often, but it can take several passes. Urine that reached the underlay is hard to extract from the top. Use the pet formula your manual recommends, extract until the area is clean and let it dry fully. If the smell comes back, the pad may need professional cleaning or replacement.

None of these three models heats water. BISSELL recommends warm, not boiling, tap water for the Little Green Max Pet. For the Shark models, follow the water temperature given in the manual.

Yes. BISSELL lists upholstery, stairs, pet beds and car interiors for the Little Green Max Pet, and Shark lists couches, upholstery and cars for the StainStriker. Check the fabric's care label and test a hidden spot first.

No. Wet dry vacuums and steam mops are built for sealed hard floors. They don't extract urine from carpet fibres or upholstery. For pet accidents on soft surfaces, use a carpet and upholstery cleaner.

Use the formulas listed in your manual. Shark's StainStriker system is designed around two Shark formulas that mix in the tool, and BISSELL designs the Little Green Max Pet around its own formulas, such as PET PRO OXY. Household cleaners can foam or leave a residue in the carpet.

Only the hair in the patch you're cleaning. Vacuum first. The Little Green Max Pet includes a pet hair removal tool. For heavy shedding on wall-to-wall carpet, an upright built for pet hair, such as Shark's CarpetXpert HairPro Pet with StainStriker, is the better fit.

The StainStriker on Amazon is the PX202BRN. Its listing title names four tools, including a pet mess tool, and full-size formulas. Shark's Canadian site lists the base unit as the PX200C. Match the model number and check the box contents on the listing.

Check the rug's care label and your machine's manual first. Wool and other natural fibres can shrink or lose colour if they're over-wet or cleaned with the wrong formula. Test a hidden corner and keep your passes light.

It depends on how wet it gets, the pile and the room. Make extra passes with the spray off, as BISSELL's instructions describe, and speed things up with a fan or an open window.
