The soleplate of my iron keeps snagging the fabric
Home Nura guide — category: Irons & Steam Generator Irons
Diagnosis
An iron soleplate that snags fabric is most often fouled with starch, limescale or melted synthetic fibres. The surface then loses its glide, and a temperature set too high or a scratched soleplate makes things worse.
Possible causes
- Starch, ironing-spray or limescale residue — it scorches onto the soleplate and forms a rough layer that drags.
- Melted synthetic fibres — an overly hot pass over polyester or nylon leaves a sticky, barely visible film.
- Steam holes clogged with scale — water drips unevenly, leaves marks and makes the soleplate less slippery.
- Scratched or flaking coating — a drop or contact with a zipper creates rough spots that catch the fabric.
Recommended steps
- 1Unplug the iron, let it cool completely, then wipe the soleplate with a soft damp cloth and a drop of dish soap.
- 2If the deposit resists, apply a gentle paste of baking soda and water if the manual allows, and wipe without scraping the metal.
- 3Never use steel wool, blades or abrasive cleaners, which scratch the coating and make the soleplate catch even more.
- 4Empty the tank and run the anti-scale or self-clean function described in the manual to clear the steam holes.
- 5Iron at the temperature shown on the garment label and use a pressing cloth on delicate fabrics.
Repair or replace?
If the soleplate is deeply scratched, flaking or warped, cleaning will not restore the glide and the iron will damage your clothes. An older iron with a damaged soleplate is better replaced than repaired.

Frequently asked questions
Usually, yes, if the failure shows up during the warranty period and isn't caused by misuse. A product in the Irons & Steam Generator Irons category bought new from an authorized retailer normally comes with a manufacturer's warranty: check its length in the manual or on the brand's website. Consumer protection rules also vary by province and territory, so keep your proof of purchase.
If you're still within the store's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, the manufacturer's warranty takes over: its customer support can arrange a repair or a replacement. Even outside the warranty, the manufacturer can often repair the device for a fee. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.
Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in the Irons & Steam Generator Irons category whose recurring failures are documented in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never tops our rankings, whatever the brand.

Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems. For a product in the Irons & Steam Generator Irons category, stick to the steps described in the manufacturer's manual and read the warranty terms before going any further.
When a product fails in its first few months of normal use, the cause is usually a manufacturing defect. Contact the seller or the manufacturer with your proof of purchase and a description of the symptom: for a model in the Irons & Steam Generator Irons category that is still under warranty, this is the typical case for a free repair or replacement. Warranty terms vary by brand, so read yours.
