Troubleshooting

My air fryer drawer won't close all the way

Home Nura guide — category: Air Fryers

Severity: moderate

Diagnosis

An air fryer drawer that won't close properly is usually blocked by something: too much food, parchment paper that has lifted or hardened grease on the runners. A warped drawer or basket is less common, but it can happen after a knock or repeated high heat.

Possible causes

  • Overfilled basket or food sticking up — the food hits the heating element or housing and keeps the drawer from sliding all the way in.
  • Lifted parchment paper or foil — it gets caught at the back or under the basket and jams the drawer.
  • Baked-on grease on the runners — hardened buildup adds friction and stops the drawer before the end of its travel.
  • Basket not clicked in, or a bent handle — the basket isn't locked into the drawer and sticks out slightly past the edge.

What to do

  1. 1Unplug the air fryer and let it cool completely before you touch the drawer, the basket or the inside of the housing.
  2. 2Pull out the drawer and basket, remove any trapped paper, foil or food, and make sure nothing is left at the back of the cavity.
  3. 3Clean the runners, rims and opening with a nonabrasive sponge and hot, soapy water, then dry everything thoroughly.
  4. 4Put the basket back until it clicks, spread the food in a flat layer below the max fill line and push the drawer closed gently.
  5. 5Never bypass the safety switch: the air fryer heats only when the drawer is fully closed, and that protection has to keep working.

Repair or replace?

If the drawer is bent, the handle is broken or the housing is warped so the drawer won't shut, a repair is rarely reliable. A flaking nonstick coating is another reason to replace the air fryer, for both hygiene and safety.

Frequently asked questions

Check the manufacturer's warranty first: how long it lasts and what it covers vary by brand and model, so read the terms for yours and keep your proof of purchase. If you bought it new in the EU, a two-year legal guarantee also applies (Directive (EU) 2019/771), covering defects present at delivery, whenever they first show up.

If you're still within the seller's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, go through the manufacturer's support team: it handles warranty claims and can often repair the unit even after the warranty has run out. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.

Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in our Air Fryers guide whose recurring failures show up in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never makes it to the top, whatever the brand.

Generally, yes, if you stick to routine maintenance: cleaning, replacing a gasket, recalibrating. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems, so read your warranty terms before you open anything up. Anything the manufacturer's manual walks you through is the safe zone.

Your proof of purchase, the exact model name and a record of the symptom: photos, a short video, the sound it makes and any error code. Note when the problem started and what you've already tried. With all that in hand, support can pin down the problem much faster.
