How do I clean burned-on residue from an air fryer?
Home Nura guide — category: Air Fryers
Diagnosis
To clean burned-on residue from an air fryer, let it cool, soak the drawer and basket in hot, soapy water, then scrub with a nonabrasive sponge. A baking soda paste helps with stubborn buildup without damaging the nonstick coating.
Possible causes
- Grease drips that carbonize — drops fall to the bottom of the drawer and blacken with each use if it isn't cleaned.
- Sugary marinades or thick sauces — the sugar caramelizes, then burns onto the basket and bonds firmly to the surface.
- Putting off cleaning between uses — layers of grease build up and harden under repeated heat.
- High heat with no oil or suitable liner — food sticks to the basket and leaves black crusts that are hard to lift off.
What to do
- 1Unplug the air fryer and let it cool completely before you take out the drawer and basket for cleaning.
- 2Soak the drawer and basket for 15 to 30 minutes in hot water with dish soap to soften the buildup.
- 3Scrub with a soft sponge or brush; for stubborn residue, spread on a paste of baking soda and water and let it sit.
- 4With the air fryer cold, wipe the inside of the housing and the heating element with a well-wrung damp cloth or a soft brush, without pouring water in.
- 5Rinse, dry every part thoroughly and reassemble. Never use steel wool or abrasive cleaners on the coating.
Repair or replace?
If the nonstick coating is flaking, rust appears or a burning smell lingers after a deep clean, the air fryer becomes less safe and less hygienic. At that point, replace it rather than keep cooking in it.

Frequently asked questions
Check the manufacturer's warranty first: how long it lasts and what it covers vary by brand and model, so read the terms for yours and keep your proof of purchase. If you bought it new in the EU, a two-year legal guarantee also applies (Directive (EU) 2019/771), covering defects present at delivery, whenever they first show up.
If you're still within the seller's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, go through the manufacturer's support team: it handles warranty claims and can often repair the unit even after the warranty has run out. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.
Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in our Air Fryers guide whose recurring failures show up in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never makes it to the top, whatever the brand.
Generally, yes, if you stick to routine maintenance: cleaning, replacing a gasket, recalibrating. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems, so read your warranty terms before you open anything up. Anything the manufacturer's manual walks you through is the safe zone.
Your proof of purchase, the exact model name and a record of the symptom: photos, a short video, the sound it makes and any error code. Note when the problem started and what you've already tried. With all that in hand, support can pin down the problem much faster.
