My steam cleaner leaks from the cap while heating up
Home Nura guide — category: Steam Cleaners
Diagnosis
A leak from the cap while the unit heats up usually points to a worn seal, a cap that isn't screwed on properly or scale on its seat. Because the boiler is under pressure, turn the unit off and never unscrew the cap while it's hot: the risk of scalding is real.
Possible causes
- Cap seal hardened, cracked or warped — it no longer seals watertight when pressure builds in the boiler.
- Cap not fully or squarely screwed on — the threads are misaligned, or the safety lock hasn't fully engaged.
- Mineral scale on the cap seat or threads — buildup keeps the seal from pressing flat against the boiler.
- Boiler filled past the max line — the extra water gets pushed toward the cap as temperature and pressure rise.
What to do
- 1Unplug the unit right away and let it cool for several hours; never touch or open the cap while it's hot.
- 2Once it's cold, unscrew the cap following the manual and inspect the seal: it should be flexible, intact and properly seated.
- 3Clean the seat and threads with a damp cloth, removing mineral deposits without scratching the metal.
- 4Fill only to the max line and screw the cap on all the way, checking the alignment and the safety lock.
- 5If the leak comes back, stop using the unit and order an original cap or seal, or contact the manufacturer.
Repair or replace?
If the cap, its threads or the safety valve are damaged, or the leak continues with a new seal, the unit is no longer safe. Replace it rather than trying to repair it yourself, especially if it's old or the boiler is cracked.

Frequently asked questions
Check the manufacturer's warranty first: how long it lasts and what it covers vary by brand and model, so read the terms for yours and keep your proof of purchase. If you bought it new in the EU, a two-year legal guarantee also applies (Directive (EU) 2019/771), covering defects present at delivery, whenever they first show up.
If you're still within the seller's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, go through the manufacturer's support team: it handles warranty claims and can often repair the unit even after the warranty has run out. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.
Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in our Steam Cleaners guide whose recurring failures show up in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never makes it to the top, whatever the brand.
Generally, yes, if you stick to routine maintenance: cleaning, replacing a gasket, recalibrating. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems, so read your warranty terms before you open anything up. Anything the manufacturer's manual walks you through is the safe zone.
Your proof of purchase, the exact model name and a record of the symptom: photos, a short video, the sound it makes and any error code. Note when the problem started and what you've already tried. With all that in hand, support can pin down the problem much faster.
