Troubleshooting

My steam cleaner spits water instead of dry steam

Home Nura guide — category: Steam Cleaners

Severity: moderate

Diagnosis

A steam cleaner that spits water is really producing wet steam: the water condenses before it leaves the nozzle. The most common causes are a unit that hasn't fully heated up, an overfilled tank or scale buildup that disrupts heating.

Possible causes

  • Used before it reaches full temperature — the steam isn't dry yet, so drops of water come out of the nozzle.
  • Tank filled past the max line — water gets carried out with the steam instead of staying in the boiler.
  • Scale in the boiler or nozzle — it reduces heating and narrows the outlet, causing uneven spitting.
  • Long or cold hose, or a wet attachment — steam condenses on the way and comes out as water.

What to do

  1. 1Unplug the unit and let it cool completely before refilling; never unscrew the cap while it's hot or under pressure.
  2. 2Fill only to the max line, using the type of water the manual specifies, then wait for the ready light.
  3. 3Point the first few seconds of steam at a cloth to clear condensed water before you clean the surface.
  4. 4Descale the boiler and nozzle using the method in the manual, sticking to the approved product and rinse times.
  5. 5Uncoil the hose fully, avoid wet attachments and switch to a lower steam setting if your model has one.

Repair or replace?

If the spitting returns right after a proper descale, the boiler or valve is probably damaged. On an older unit, replacement parts often cost nearly as much as a new model, which would also be safer.

Frequently asked questions

Check the manufacturer's warranty first: how long it lasts and what it covers vary by brand and model, so read the terms for yours and keep your proof of purchase. If you bought it new in the EU, a two-year legal guarantee also applies (Directive (EU) 2019/771), covering defects present at delivery, whenever they first show up.

If you're still within the seller's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, go through the manufacturer's support team: it handles warranty claims and can often repair the unit even after the warranty has run out. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.

Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in our Steam Cleaners guide whose recurring failures show up in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never makes it to the top, whatever the brand.

Generally, yes, if you stick to routine maintenance: cleaning, replacing a gasket, recalibrating. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems, so read your warranty terms before you open anything up. Anything the manufacturer's manual walks you through is the safe zone.

Your proof of purchase, the exact model name and a record of the symptom: photos, a short video, the sound it makes and any error code. Note when the problem started and what you've already tried. With all that in hand, support can pin down the problem much faster.
