Troubleshooting

The soleplate on my iron sticks and drags on fabric

Home Nura guide — category: Steam Irons & Steam Generators

Severity: minor

Diagnosis

An iron soleplate that drags on fabric is most often coated with starch, mineral scale or melted synthetic fibers. The surface loses its glide, and a temperature set too high or a scratched soleplate makes it worse.

Possible causes

  • Starch, ironing spray or mineral residue — it scorches onto the soleplate and forms a rough layer that drags.
  • Melted synthetic fibers — a pass that's too hot over polyester or nylon leaves a sticky, barely visible film.
  • Steam vents clogged with scale — water drips unevenly, leaves marks and makes the soleplate less slippery.
  • Scratched or flaking coating — a drop or contact with a zipper creates rough spots that catch the fabric.

What to do

  1. 1Unplug the iron, let it cool completely, then wipe the soleplate with a soft damp cloth and a drop of dish soap.
  2. 2If the residue won't budge, apply a gentle paste of baking soda and water if the manual allows it, and wipe without scraping the metal.
  3. 3Never use steel wool, blades or abrasive cleaners, which scratch the coating and make the soleplate catch even more.
  4. 4Empty the water tank and run the anti-scale or self-clean function described in the manual to clear the steam vents.
  5. 5Iron at the temperature shown on the garment's care label and use a pressing cloth on delicate fabrics.

Repair or replace?

If the soleplate is deeply scratched, flaking or warped, cleaning won't bring back the glide, and the iron will damage your clothes. An older iron with a damaged soleplate is better replaced than repaired.

Frequently asked questions

Check the manufacturer's warranty first: how long it lasts and what it covers vary by brand and model, so read the terms for yours and keep your proof of purchase. If you bought it new in the EU, a two-year legal guarantee also applies (Directive (EU) 2019/771), covering defects present at delivery, whenever they first show up.

If you're still within the seller's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, go through the manufacturer's support team: it handles warranty claims and can often repair the unit even after the warranty has run out. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.

Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in our Steam Irons & Steam Generators guide whose recurring failures show up in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never makes it to the top, whatever the brand.

Generally, yes, if you stick to routine maintenance: cleaning, replacing a gasket, recalibrating. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems, so read your warranty terms before you open anything up. Anything the manufacturer's manual walks you through is the safe zone.

Your proof of purchase, the exact model name and a record of the symptom: photos, a short video, the sound it makes and any error code. Note when the problem started and what you've already tried. With all that in hand, support can pin down the problem much faster.
