Frequently asked questions
Only if the flooring manufacturer says so; many laminate and engineered wood makers advise against steam because it can swell the boards at the joints. On sealed engineered wood in good condition, some allow a quick pass on the lowest setting. Never leave the mop standing still in one spot. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are where a steam mop is safest and most effective.
Only lightly: with a carpet glider, a steam mop refreshes the surface and lifts some odours, but it doesn't deep clean. For ground-in dirt and stains, a carpet cleaner that sprays and extracts water works far better. You can rent one for an occasional clean, or buy one if you have pets. Always check the carpet's care label first, especially for wool.
Usually yes, but follow the manual: many manufacturers want tap water, sometimes mixed half and half with distilled water if yours is very hard. Some machines work poorly on pure distilled water, while others use a descaling cartridge. If your water is hard, descale on schedule. Never add perfume, essential oils or detergent to the tank.
At most its rated power for as long as you use it: a 1,500 W steam mop used for 30 minutes uses up to 0.75 kWh. In practice the heater cycles on and off, so real use is lower. Multiply the kWh by your rate per kWh to get the cost per clean: at an example rate of 10¢, that's 7.5¢ at most. Canister steam cleaners also spend some energy heating the boiler before you start.
It removes surface mould from tiles and grout, but it doesn't fix the cause, which is usually condensation or moisture. Steam the area slowly, wipe it dry and ventilate with the bathroom fan or an open window. Mould inside silicone caulking usually stays, and the caulking then needs replacing. If mould keeps coming back and you rent, report it to your landlord in writing.
