The best smart curtain openers and blind motors of 2026
Models compared for your home — Comfort & Air Quality
Searching for “smart curtain opener”? This guide brings together our picks in the Smart Curtains category, part of our Comfort & Air Quality section. We grade every model on what really matters over the life of a product: annual energy cost, the EU energy label, data privacy under the EU's GDPR, spare parts available for five years and Matter support. Models that promise more than they deliver are dropped, and the ones built to last make the cut.

Frequently asked questions
On a straight curtain rod or track, usually yes, but bay window tracks are harder: many clip-on robots can't get around the bends. Clip-on motors come in versions for round rods, U-rails and I-rails, so check the type and the rod diameter before you order. For a bay window, a made-to-measure motorized track, bent to fit, is often the reliable option. Check the maximum curtain weight too, especially for heavy lined, blackout or thermal curtains.
Yes, clip-on curtain robots attach to your existing rod or track with no drilling and come off without a trace when you move out. They run on rechargeable batteries, so there's no wiring either. A motorized track that screws into the ceiling or wall is different: get your landlord's permission in writing first. Small solar panels for the robots stick to the glass, which is usually fine, but check your lease if you're unsure.
A retrofit robot is cheaper and quick to install; a motorized track is quieter, handles heavier curtains and looks neater. Robots suit light to medium curtains and renters. A plug-in or hardwired motorized track copes with long, heavy curtains and wide windows, but it has to be mounted on the ceiling or wall and needs an outlet nearby or a hardwired connection, which a licensed electrician should install. For a bedroom, compare noise levels, since some robots are noticeably louder than a track motor.
No subscription is needed, but you usually need a hub or Wi-Fi bridge for remote, voice or scheduled control. Bluetooth-only motors work from your phone within range. Adding the maker's hub, or a Zigbee or Matter hub depending on the model, lets you open curtains at sunrise, with Alexa or Google Home, or while you're away. Check compatibility with your ecosystem before buying, especially Apple Home, which some motors support only through a bridge.
Usually because the curtain is snagging: stiff rings or gliders, a bent rod or a curtain that's too heavy makes the motor think it has hit an obstacle. Slide the curtain by hand along its whole length, clean the rod or track, and add a little silicone spray if the gliders stick. Recalibrate the open and closed positions in the app. A low battery can also stop it partway, so charge it fully and install any firmware updates.
