Troubleshooting

The red warning light on my air purifier stays on all the time

Home Nura guide — category: Air Purifiers

Severity: moderate

Diagnosis

A solid red light on an air purifier most often means the sensor is detecting poor air quality, or a filter-replacement reminder hasn't been reset. The meaning varies by model, so check the manual before you assume something is broken.

Possible causes

  • Genuinely polluted air — cooking smoke, dust or aerosol sprays make the sensor show its alert color until the air clears.
  • Filter reminder not reset — the usage counter keeps running after a replacement if the reset step was skipped.
  • Dirty particle sensor — dust on the sensor skews the reading and keeps a poor air quality warning on.
  • Filter or cover not seated properly — the purifier detects an assembly problem and keeps the warning light on.

What to do

  1. 1Unplug the purifier, open the cover and make sure the filter is installed correctly and facing the right way, then close the cover firmly.
  2. 2Check the manual for what the red light means on your model, its alert color and how to reset the filter indicator.
  3. 3With the purifier unplugged, vacuum or dust the pre-filter, then clean the sensor with a dry cotton swab or a soft brush.
  4. 4Air out the room, remove nearby sources of pollution such as smoke or aerosol sprays, and run the purifier on a high speed for a few hours.
  5. 5After installing a new filter, reset the counter following the manual, often by holding a dedicated button for a few seconds.

Repair or replace?

If the light stays red after a filter change, a sensor cleaning and a reset, the control board or sensor has probably failed. When filters are no longer available or the purifier is old and noisy, replacing it makes more sense.

Check the manufacturer's warranty first: how long it lasts and what it covers vary by brand and model, so read the terms for yours and keep your proof of purchase. If you bought it new in the EU, a two-year legal guarantee also applies (Directive (EU) 2019/771), covering defects present at delivery, whenever they first show up.

If you're still within the seller's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, go through the manufacturer's support team: it handles warranty claims and can often repair the unit even after the warranty has run out. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.

Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in our Air Purifiers guide whose recurring failures show up in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never makes it to the top, whatever the brand.

Generally, yes, if you stick to routine maintenance: cleaning, replacing a gasket, recalibrating. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems, so read your warranty terms before you open anything up. Anything the manufacturer's manual walks you through is the safe zone.

Your proof of purchase, the exact model name and a record of the symptom: photos, a short video, the sound it makes and any error code. Note when the problem started and what you've already tried. With all that in hand, support can pin down the problem much faster.
