The compressor on my portable AC cuts out and restarts every two minutes
Home Nura guide — category: Smart Portable Air Conditioners
Diagnosis
A portable air conditioner whose compressor shuts off and restarts every couple of minutes is almost always overheating or getting a false reading from its temperature sensor, usually because of a clogged filter or a restricted exhaust hose. Fix these simple causes before you suspect the refrigerant circuit.
Possible causes
- Clogged filter or grille — airflow is poor, the unit overheats and its thermal protection keeps shutting the compressor off.
- Kinked or blocked exhaust hose — heat can't escape, pressure rises and the unit shuts itself down for protection.
- Fooled temperature sensor — cold air from the unit hits the sensor, so it thinks the set temperature has been reached far too soon.
- Full condensate tank or stuck float switch — the unit pauses briefly, then restarts without ever settling into steady cooling.
What to do
- 1Unplug the unit and wait at least 30 minutes so the thermal protection resets and the refrigerant pressure settles.
- 2Remove the filter, wash it in lukewarm water and let it dry completely, then gently dust the air intake and outlet grilles.
- 3Make sure the exhaust hose is short, straight and firmly connected, and that its outdoor end isn't blocked by a shutter or blind.
- 4Move the unit away from walls and curtains, keep it clear of heat sources, and empty the condensate tank or drain hose.
- 5Lower the set temperature several degrees or try another mode and see whether the cycles get longer; if not, contact the manufacturer's customer support.
Repair or replace?
If short cycling continues after a full cleanup, low refrigerant or a worn compressor is the likely cause; both need a qualified technician and often cost more than an older unit is worth, so replacing it is usually the smart move.

Frequently asked questions
Check the manufacturer's warranty first: how long it lasts and what it covers vary by brand and model, so read the terms for yours and keep your proof of purchase. If you bought it new in the EU, a two-year legal guarantee also applies (Directive (EU) 2019/771), covering defects present at delivery, whenever they first show up.
If you're still within the seller's return window, a return or exchange is usually the fastest fix. After that, go through the manufacturer's support team: it handles warranty claims and can often repair the unit even after the warranty has run out. Either way, keep your proof of purchase.
Our public methodology lowers the Nura Score /10 of any model in our Smart Portable Air Conditioners guide whose recurring failures show up in owner reviews. A model that breaks down too often never makes it to the top, whatever the brand.
Generally, yes, if you stick to routine maintenance: cleaning, replacing a gasket, recalibrating. Irreversible changes to the hardware are what can cause problems, so read your warranty terms before you open anything up. Anything the manufacturer's manual walks you through is the safe zone.
Your proof of purchase, the exact model name and a record of the symptom: photos, a short video, the sound it makes and any error code. Note when the problem started and what you've already tried. With all that in hand, support can pin down the problem much faster.
