Best Carpet Cleaners for Pet Stains of 2026: Spot Cleaners and Uprights Compared

For most pet owners, the BISSELL Little Green Max Pet 3860 is the carpet cleaner to buy first: it weighs 8.2 lb (3.7 kg), its 15 ft (4.6 m) cord and 4.8 ft (1.5 m) hose give it the longest reach of the two portable spot cleaners here, and its Self-Cleaning Tough Stain Tool flushes out residue after each mess. Choose the Shark StainStriker PX201 if set-in stains are your main problem and you don't mind refilling two formulas, and the Shark CarpetXpert with StainStriker EX201 if you want one machine for whole rooms, stairs and the couch (SharkNinja sells it, but Amazon doesn't). We compared manufacturer specs, owner's guides and owner reviews for these US models. One thing none of them does: clean hardwood or tile.

Our picks

  1. Best overall

BISSELL Little Green Max Pet 3860

Light at 8.2 lb (3.7 kg) and the longest-reaching portable here, with a Self-Cleaning Tough Stain Tool that flushes out urine and vomit residue after each job. The downside: no heater and a 32 oz (0.95 L) clean tank, so a big mess can mean a refill.

  3. Best 2-in-1 upright

    Shark CarpetXpert with StainStriker EX201

One machine deep cleans whole rooms with a 10 in (25 cm) brush-roll path, then lets you pull out a StainStriker hand tool for stairs and upholstery. Some owners wish the tanks were bigger, SharkNinja says it isn't suitable for wool, and it isn't sold on Amazon.

Quick answer: the right carpet cleaner for pet messes

Pet accidents call for a machine that sprays, scrubs and then pulls the liquid back out of the fibers. Here is how our four picks split the job.

  • Best overall: BISSELL Little Green Max Pet 3860 — light, simple, separate clean and dirty tanks and a Self-Cleaning Tough Stain Tool.
  • Best for set-in stains: Shark StainStriker PX201 — mixes two Shark formulas in the hand tool, with a shorter cord and hose.
  • Best 2-in-1 upright: Shark CarpetXpert with StainStriker EX201 — deep cleans whole rooms with a 10 in (25 cm) path, then a built-in spot cleaner pulls out for stairs and upholstery. It isn't sold on Amazon.
  • Also consider: BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus 3588F — a full-size upright with a 25 ft (7.6 m) cord, an 8 ft (2.4 m) hose and HeatWave Technology to help keep the water warm.

Carpet cleaners are not hard-floor washers

A carpet cleaner, also called a carpet shampooer or extractor, sprays water and formula deep into the pile, scrubs it, then pulls the dirty water back out with a strong suction motor into a separate tank. That extraction step is what lifts urine, vomit and grime out of carpet, rugs and upholstery instead of spreading it around.

A wet-dry vacuum (floor washer) or a steam mop does a different job: it cleans the surface of sealed hard floors with a thin film of water or steam. It isn't designed to soak and extract fabric, and a carpet cleaner isn't designed for hard floors. BISSELL says so in its own FAQ: its ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet upright is made for soft surfaces such as carpet and upholstery, and it points hard-floor owners to its CrossWave HydroSteam wet-dry vacuum instead. That's why we never rank these two families against each other.

  • Carpet cleaner: wall-to-wall carpet, area rugs, stairs, couches and upholstery, pet beds, car interiors.
  • Wet-dry vacuum or steam mop: sealed hard floors such as tile, vinyl and sealed hardwood, following your flooring maker's care advice; see our hard-floor guide.
  • Homes with both: plan on one of each, because neither type does the other's job well.

Spot cleaner or upright: which one do you need?

Portable spot cleaners, like the BISSELL Little Green Max Pet and the Shark StainStriker, are small canister machines with a carry handle, a hose and a hand tool. They're made for accidents: a fresh urine spot, vomit on the stairs, muddy paw prints on the couch, a spill on a car seat. They fit in a closet and come out in seconds.

Upright carpet cleaners, like the Shark CarpetXpert EX201 and the BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus 3588F, are pushed across the room like a vacuum, with a motorized brush roll and a wide cleaning path. They're the tool for traffic lanes, a whole room before guests arrive or a rug that smells like the dog. Both also have a hose for stairs and upholstery, but they're heavier and take more storage space.

  • Mostly accidents, one or two pets: a spot cleaner.
  • Gray traffic lanes, whole rooms, lots of carpet: an upright.
  • Both, with one machine: the Shark CarpetXpert EX201, whose spot-cleaning hand tool pulls out of the upright.

BISSELL Little Green Max Pet vs. Shark StainStriker

These two portable spot cleaners do the same job. The differences are reach, formulas and cleanup.

  • Reach: the BISSELL has a 15 ft (4.6 m) cord and a 4.8 ft (1.5 m) hose; the Shark has a 12 ft (3.7 m) cord and a 4.3 ft (1.3 m) hose. On stairs and in a car, those extra feet mean fewer trips to move the machine and the plug.
  • Weight: BISSELL lists 8.2 lb (3.7 kg). SharkNinja's feature list says the StainStriker weighs under 9 lb (4.1 kg), while its spec table shows 13.23 lb (6 kg).
  • Tanks: the BISSELL has a 32 oz (0.95 L) clean-water tank and a separate dirty-water tank. The Shark has three: one for water and Deep Clean Pro formula, a StainStriker tank for OXY Multiplier and a dirty-water tank. SharkNinja doesn't list their capacities on its product page.
  • Formulas: the Shark mixes its two formulas in the hand tool, the basis of SharkNinja's claim of 20X more stain-striking power. The trade-off is two Shark-only formulas to buy and refill. The BISSELL uses one formula; on Amazon, it comes in a bundle with 32 oz (0.95 L) of BISSELL's PET PRO OXY Spot & Stain formula.
  • Suction: BISSELL claims 30% more suction than the Shark StainStriker, based on ASTM F558 air-power measurements through the hose. It's a manufacturer claim, but suction is what pulls water and odor back out of the carpet pad.
  • Tools and cleanup: the BISSELL comes with two specialty tools, including a Self-Cleaning Tough Stain Tool that flushes out residue after you suction a mess. The Shark comes with an integrated crevice tool, a 3.5 in (9 cm) reversible bristle tool and a third tool that varies by listing: a 7 in (18 cm) wide-path tool or a pet mess tool. SharkNinja's box list for the PX201 doesn't include a hose-cleaning tool.
  • Warranty: SharkNinja lists a 3-year limited warranty for the PX201; check BISSELL's warranty guide for the 3860.

Shark CarpetXpert EX201: an upright with a spot cleaner built in

The CarpetXpert with StainStriker EX201 is a 2-in-1: an upright carpet cleaner with a 10 in (25 cm) cleaning path, a high-speed brush roll and high-pressure PowerSpray, plus the same two-formula StainStriker hand tool as the portable model, on a hose that pulls out of the body. It runs on 120 V at 960 W and 8 A, has a 20 ft (6.1 m) cord and, per SharkNinja's box list, comes with an integrated crevice tool, a 3.5 in (9 cm) reversible bristle tool and a 7 in (18 cm) wide-path tool. SharkNinja lists a 5-year limited warranty.

The catches: SharkNinja lists it at 22.71 lb (10.3 kg) and doesn't publish its tank capacities, and some owners on SharkNinja's site wish the clean and dirty-water tanks were bigger, so plan on more refills in large rooms. SharkNinja also says it isn't suitable for wool. And it isn't sold on Amazon: you can buy it directly from SharkNinja or from other retailers. On Amazon, the closest option is the Shark CarpetXpert HairPro with StainStriker, sold in a bundle with 48 oz (1.4 L) of Deep Clean Pet formula. It's a different model and its listing doesn't show a model number, so check its specs on SharkNinja's site before you buy.

When a bigger upright makes more sense

If you have a lot of wall-to-wall carpet, the BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus 3588F is the full-size alternative. BISSELL lists a 25 ft (7.6 m) cord, an 8 ft (2.4 m) hose for stairs and upholstery, a 12-row Dual DirtLifter PowerBrush, a CleanShot pretreater with OXY for set-in pet stains and an Express Clean mode that BISSELL says dries carpet in about 30 minutes. Its HeatWave Technology uses the motor's heat to help keep the water warm. Like every machine here, it doesn't heat the water itself, so start with warm tap water.

It weighs 17.5 lb (7.9 kg) and needs real closet space, and BISSELL's 3588F page doesn't list the tank capacity. For accidents alone, it's more machine than you need.

How to clean pet urine, vomit and hair with a carpet cleaner

  • Vacuum first: Shark's owner's guide says to run a regular vacuum before using its spot cleaner. Loose hair clogs hoses and tools, and Shark notes that its pet mess tool isn't meant for pet hair.
  • Pick up solids by hand: remove vomit or feces with paper towels before you extract. Shark's pet mess tool holds only 6 oz (0.18 L) before liquid runs into the hose.
  • Use warm, not hot, water: BISSELL says warm tap water, never boiling; Shark's guides cap it at 140°F (60°C).
  • One wet pass, one dry pass: BISSELL's method is a pass with the sprayer on, then a pass with it off to pull out moisture, repeated until the spot is clean. Shark warns that overspraying makes drying take longer.
  • Rinse at the end: for a final rinse, Shark suggests removing or emptying the StainStriker tank and spraying water only.
  • Clean the machine every time: Shark's guides say to clean the unit after every use to avoid odors, bacteria and mold. Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank and flush the hose with clean water.
  • Check the care label: test a hidden spot and follow the care instructions for your carpet or couch; SharkNinja says the EX201 isn't suitable for wool.

What to look for

  • Cord and hose length: for stairs and cars, a longer cord and hose save trips. Among the spot cleaners here, the BISSELL reaches farther (15 ft cord and 4.8 ft hose vs. 12 ft and 4.3 ft). If you need an extension cord, Shark's guide says to keep it at 50 ft (15 m) or shorter.
  • Separate clean and dirty tanks: every model here keeps dirty water apart from the clean solution. Bigger tanks mean fewer trips to the sink on large jobs.
  • Heat: none of these has a water heater. BISSELL's HeatWave helps keep warm water warm on the ProHeat; on the others, warm tap water is the whole story.
  • Self-cleaning: look for a tool that flushes itself or the hose, such as BISSELL's Self-Cleaning Tough Stain Tool. Shark's owner's guide describes a Hose-Cleaning Tool, but it isn't in SharkNinja's box lists for the PX201 or the EX201, so plan on flushing the hose with clean water. It matters more with urine and vomit than with spilled juice.
  • Formulas: Shark's StainStriker models use two Shark formulas, and Shark's guides say to use only Shark CarpetXpert and StainStriker formulas in the tanks. Factor in the refills.
  • Power: the Shark models are rated for 120 V outlets and use a grounded plug; Shark's guide says not to use an adapter.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using a steam mop or a wet-dry floor washer on a rug or a couch: it isn't designed to extract water from fabric.
  • Buying a full-size upright for the occasional accident: a spot cleaner is quicker to grab and easier to clean afterward.
  • Filling the tank with boiling water or homemade mixes.
  • Soaking the spot: more water means longer drying, and Shark warns against overspraying.
  • Putting the machine away dirty: a tank of old urine water is how a cleaner starts to smell.
  • Assuming every listing has the same tools: Shark's tool sets vary between listings, so read the box contents.

The bottom line

For pet accidents on carpet, stairs, couches and car seats, start with the BISSELL Little Green Max Pet 3860: it's light, reaches farther than the Shark portable and flushes its own stain tool. The Shark StainStriker PX201 is the pick if you want its two-formula system for old stains and can live with a shorter cord and hose. For whole rooms, the Shark CarpetXpert with StainStriker EX201 is the most flexible upright here because the spot cleaner is built in, though you'll have to buy it outside Amazon, and the BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus 3588F is the bigger option for lots of carpet. Just don't expect any of them to clean your hardwood or tile: that's a job for a wet-dry vacuum or a steam mop.

Frequently asked questions

No. These machines soak and extract soft surfaces: carpet, rugs, stairs, upholstery and car interiors. BISSELL says its ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet upright is made for soft surfaces and points hard-floor owners to its CrossWave HydroSteam wet-dry vacuum. For sealed hard floors, use a wet-dry vacuum (floor washer) or a steam mop.

None has a heater. BISSELL says to fill the Little Green Max Pet with warm tap water, not boiling. The ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus has HeatWave Technology, which uses the motor's heat to help keep warm water warm. Shark's guides say to use water no hotter than 140°F (60°C).

Not in the Shark models: Shark's guides say to use only Shark CarpetXpert and StainStriker formulas in the tanks. For the BISSELL machines, check the user guide before you use anything other than a BISSELL formula, and never add boiling water.

It can help a lot on a fresh accident, because it pulls the urine back out instead of just masking it. SharkNinja claims its StainStriker eliminates tough odors, including pet urine and smoke, and on Amazon BISSELL sells the Little Green Max Pet in a bundle with its PET PRO OXY Spot & Stain formula. Old stains that soaked into the pad may need several passes.

Start with a spot cleaner such as the BISSELL Little Green Max Pet 3860: it's quick to grab for each accident and easy to clean afterward. Choose an upright if you also want to deep clean whole rooms, and the Shark CarpetXpert EX201 if you'd rather have both jobs in one machine.

Yes, a portable spot cleaner is the right tool. BISSELL lists car interiors among the Little Green Max Pet's surfaces, and its 15 ft (4.6 m) cord and 4.8 ft (1.5 m) hose help in a driveway. If you need an extension cord, Shark's guide says to keep it at 50 ft (15 m) or shorter.

No. SharkNinja sells the EX201 directly, and other retailers carry it, but on Amazon we found only accessories marked as compatible with it. Amazon does sell the Shark CarpetXpert HairPro with StainStriker, a different model, in a bundle with 48 oz (1.4 L) of Deep Clean Pet formula. Its listing doesn't show a model number, so compare its specs on SharkNinja's site before you buy.
