ecobee vs. Nest: Which Smart Thermostat Fits Your Home?

The short answer

For most US homes, the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is the better pick: its included SmartSensor tracks occupancy as well as temperature, it ships with a Power Extender Kit for homes without a C wire, and it carries a 3-year warranty. Choose the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) for Matter, a schedule that can program itself, or a three-stage system. Specs checked November 1, 2026.

Why this ranking

We rank models on product criteria only, weighted as shown below. Price and clicks play no part.

  1. HVAC and heat pump compatibility25%

    A thermostat that can't drive every stage of your system wastes equipment you paid for. We compare the stages and terminals each maker lists: Nest controls up to three heating and cooling stages and lists separate AUX, AUX2 and E connections, while the ecobee Premium covers 2H/2C plus two aux stages and dual fuel. Slight edge: Nest.

  2. C-wire and installation15%

    Many older US homes have no common (C) wire at the thermostat. We compare how each maker says the thermostat gets power: ecobee requires 24 VAC power and puts a Power Extender Kit in the box; Nest uses Power Sharing and a built-in battery, and Google says fewer than 1% of homes need a C wire or its Nest Power Connector, sold separately. Slight edge: ecobee, because the fix ships with it.

  3. Room sensors20%

    A hallway thermostat can't see a cold bedroom. We compare the sensor in the box and the limits on adding more: ecobee's SmartSensor reads temperature and occupancy (up to 32 per account, battery rated up to 5 years), while Nest's sensor reads temperature only (up to six per thermostat, battery rated up to 3 years). Clear edge: ecobee.

  4. Energy-saving features, as published20%

    We start with ENERGY STAR certification, which is based on field data, then look at how each maker documents its savings and automation. Both are certified; Google publishes bill-based averages and offers a fully automatic schedule plus Heat Pump Balance, while ecobee's Schedule Assistant suggests changes for you to approve. Slight edge: Nest.

  5. Smart home and Matter10%

    We check the Connectivity Standards Alliance certification ledger and each maker's platform list. Nest is Matter certified; ecobee isn't, but it pairs natively with Apple Home and works with Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings. Slight edge: Nest.

  6. Warranty, subscriptions and support10%

    We compare published warranties and which features sit behind a paid plan. ecobee offers 3 years versus Nest's 2 years at retail; neither charges for core thermostat features, though ecobee's smoke alarm detection and security tools need its Smart Security plan. Edge: ecobee.

We scored each thermostat from 1 to 10 on our six criteria, using only manufacturer specs, ENERGY STAR and CSA records and published independent findings, then applied the weights.

  • HVAC and heat pump compatibility (25%): Nest 9, ecobee 8.
  • C-wire and installation (15%): ecobee 9, Nest 8.
  • Room sensors (20%): ecobee 10, Nest 7.
  • Energy-saving features, as published (20%): Nest 9, ecobee 8.
  • Smart home and Matter (10%): Nest 8, ecobee 7.
  • Warranty, subscriptions and support (10%): ecobee 9, Nest 7.

Weighted, the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium comes out ahead, 8.55 to 8.15 out of 10, mainly on the strength of its occupancy-sensing room sensor and longer warranty. Shift the weights to fit your home and the answer can flip: a Matter household or a three-stage system should lean Nest.

How we compare →

Choose ecobee if… or Nest if…

Choose the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium if:

  • some rooms run hot or cold and you want the thermostat to favor the rooms people are using, since the included SmartSensor detects occupancy;
  • your thermostat cable has no C wire and you'd rather power the thermostat with the included Power Extender Kit than rely on power sharing;
  • you live in Apple Home, or you want Siri or Alexa built into the thermostat (Siri needs an Apple home hub such as a HomePod);
  • you want indoor air quality alerts and filter reminders on the wall;
  • a 3-year warranty matters to you.

Choose the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) if:

  • you want a schedule that builds itself: set Smart Schedule to Automatic, or to Suggestions if you'd rather approve each change;
  • you have a three-stage system, or a heat pump with two aux stages plus a separate emergency heat wire;
  • you run Google Home or want a Matter-certified thermostat you can use across platforms;
  • you'd rather not open the furnace: Google says Power Sharing means no C wire in most homes.

C-wire: how each one gets power

The ecobee Premium runs on dedicated 24 VAC power through its C and Rc terminals and has no battery. If your thermostat cable has no C wire, the included Power Extender Kit lets you power it without running a fifth wire. The kit connects at your furnace or air handler, so plan on opening that panel.

The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) combines what Google calls Power Sharing with a built-in rechargeable lithium battery. Google says it's designed to work whether or not your home has a C wire, and that in fewer than 1% of cases a C wire or a Nest Power Connector, sold separately, may be needed.

Bottom line: both install in most homes without a C wire. ecobee puts the fix in the box; Nest usually doesn't need one. Note which wires are on your current thermostat and run each brand's compatibility checker before you buy.

Room sensors: occupancy vs. temperature only

Both thermostats come with one wireless room sensor, and that's where the biggest everyday difference lies.

  • ecobee SmartSensor: temperature and occupancy, with a 140° by 100° motion field that reaches 20 ft. It works up to 60 ft from the thermostat and runs on a CR2477 battery rated for up to 5 years. Follow Me shifts comfort to the rooms in use, and one account takes up to 32 sensors.
  • Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen): temperature only, over Bluetooth Low Energy, on a CR2 battery rated for up to 3 years. You can add up to six per thermostat, then have the Nest prioritize one room or average the temperature across several.

Occupancy in each room lets the ecobee tell an empty house from a quiet one. The Nest leans on the Soli radar in the thermostat itself and, if you opt in, your phone's location to decide whether you're home. The sensors don't cross brands: SmartSensors pair only with ecobee devices, and Nest sensors need a compatible Nest thermostat.

Heat pumps and aux heat

With a heat pump, the money is in how often the thermostat calls for auxiliary heat, which Google says can cost about 2 to 5 times as much to run as the heat pump itself.

  • ecobee Premium: heat pumps with 2 heating and 2 cooling stages plus 2 stages of aux heat, and dual-fuel systems. Left on automatic staging, Aux Savings Optimization lets you lean toward savings, comfort or a balance. Switch to manual and you can set Compressor Min Outdoor Temperature and Aux Heat Max Outdoor Temperature yourself, on the thermostat.
  • Nest Learning (4th gen): heat pumps with up to 3 stages plus 1 or 2 stages of auxiliary or alternate heat and emergency heat, with separate AUX, AUX2 and E connections. Heat Pump Balance (Max Comfort by default, Balanced, Max Savings or Off) sets the aux lockout temperature for you, using local weather over Wi-Fi. With a dual-fuel system, Heat Pump Balance isn't available and you set the lockout manually.

Our read: on a typical one- or two-stage heat pump, both are capable. Nest is simpler if you want the thermostat to manage aux heat on its own; ecobee gives you or your contractor more thresholds to tune. One wiring caveat: Google says the Nest's extra connector accepts only one of W3, Y3, G3, E, HUM or DEHUM.

Matter and smart home platforms

The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is Matter certified: it appears under Google in the Connectivity Standards Alliance's public certification ledger, and Google says you can control it from Google Home and other Matter-enabled apps and assistants. Setup still requires the Google Home app.

No ecobee thermostat appears in that ledger under ecobee's vendor ID as of November 1, 2026, and the Premium's spec page doesn't list Matter. Instead, it pairs natively with Apple Home (HomeKit), has Alexa built in, offers Siri when you have an Apple home hub, and works with Google Assistant, SmartThings and IFTTT.

Bottom line: if you want one thermostat shared across several platforms through Matter, pick Nest. If your home runs on Apple Home, ecobee's native HomeKit support covers you today.

Energy savings: reading the published claims

Both thermostats are ENERGY STAR certified. The EPA says certified smart thermostats have been independently certified, based on actual field data, to deliver savings, and it puts heating and cooling at almost half of the average American household's energy bill, or more than $900 a year.

  • ecobee: up to 26% on heating and cooling costs compared with a hold of 72°F, from an internal analysis of North American customers in April 2021. ecobee turns that into up to $284 a year using an average heating and cooling cost of $1,091.
  • Google: up to 31% on heating and cooling bills against the same 72°F baseline, which Google says may not represent the typical customer. From before-and-after utility bills, Google reports average savings of 12% on heating and 15% on cooling, first in 2015 and again in a 2024 analysis.

The 26% and 31% figures share a theoretical baseline, a thermostat held at 72°F all year, so neither proves one saves more than the other in your home. Your savings depend on how you ran your old thermostat, your climate and your equipment.

The features behind the savings differ. ecobee's eco+ bundles Enhanced Smart Home and Away, Schedule Assistant suggestions, and, where available, Time of Use shifting and Community Energy Savings during peak demand. Nest offers Smart Schedule, Adaptive Eco, natural heating and cooling, Seasonal Savings, Rush Hour Rewards through participating energy companies, and Energy Shift through the free Nest Renew service.

As for running cost, the thermostats themselves draw very little: Google rates the Nest at less than 1 kWh a month, and ecobee lists up to 3.5 VA. What moves your bill is how long the furnace, AC or heat pump runs.

Rebates: start with the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder

There's no national smart thermostat rebate with a fixed amount. Utilities and other ENERGY STAR partners sponsor their own offers, so the amount, the eligible models and the deadline depend on where you live.

  • Open the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder on energystar.gov and enter your ZIP code to see offers on certified smart thermostats near you.
  • Check that your exact model is covered. Both the ecobee Premium and the Nest Learning (4th gen) are ENERGY STAR certified, and ENERGY STAR notes that certified smart thermostats are designed to work with programs some local utilities offer.
  • Ask your utility about demand response. ecobee's Community Energy Savings and Google's Rush Hour Rewards tie into utility programs that may reward you for using less energy at peak times, where offered.
  • Read the offer's terms before you buy, since each program sets its own rules.

We don't quote rebate amounts: they change by utility and by season.

Subscriptions, warranty and long-term support

  • Subscriptions: neither thermostat needs one for heating, cooling, scheduling or remote control. On the ecobee, smoke alarm detection, security monitoring and Pause when Open (with ecobee's door and window sensors) require an ecobee Smart Security subscription. Google describes Nest Renew as a free service.
  • Warranty: ecobee covers the Premium and the SmartSensor with a 3-year limited warranty. Google gives the Nest Learning (4th gen) a 2-year standard warranty at retail, or 5 years through HVAC pros, and the Nest Temperature Sensor a one-year limited warranty.
  • Support life: on October 25, 2025, Google ended app and remote support for the Nest Learning Thermostat 1st gen (2011) and 2nd gen (2012). They still run their schedules from the wall, but they no longer connect to the Nest or Google Home app or receive updates.

Alternatives in each lineup

  • ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced: keeps radar occupancy sensing and eco+ occupancy features, but there's no SmartSensor in the box and it supports only accessories connected by one wire.
  • ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential: ecobee's simplest model; its occupancy features need a SmartSensor, sold separately.
  • Google Nest Thermostat: Google's entry-level model is also Matter certified, but it doesn't learn a schedule for you and doesn't work with Nest Temperature Sensors.
  • Electric baseboard heat: both picks here are 24 V thermostats. Line-voltage baseboard heaters need a line-voltage thermostat instead.

What independent testers found

We don’t test products ourselves. These organizations publish their own results: read them on their sites.

Consumer Reports' smart thermostat roundup, updated January 1, 2026, includes both models among its picks for boilers, furnaces and central AC systems. It reports strong scores for the Premium's manual controls and automated heating and cooling, notes that the Premium can suggest adjustments to your schedule, and says the Nest 4th gen aces its lab tests for automated heating and cooling. Wirecutter's smart thermostat guide, updated January 20, 2026, names the ecobee Premium its pick.

Frequently asked questions

Usually, yes. The ecobee Premium needs 24 VAC power but ships with a Power Extender Kit that powers it without a fifth wire. The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) uses Power Sharing and a built-in battery; Google says fewer than 1% of homes need a C wire or its Nest Power Connector, sold separately.

Both handle common heat pumps with aux heat. Nest supports up to 3 heat pump stages with 1 or 2 aux stages and a separate emergency heat connection, and Heat Pump Balance sets the aux lockout for you. The ecobee Premium supports 2 stages plus 2 aux stages and dual fuel, with manual thresholds for fine-tuning.

Not as of November 1, 2026. No ecobee model appears in the Connectivity Standards Alliance's Matter certification ledger, and ecobee's spec page doesn't list Matter. The Premium works with Apple Home natively and with Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings. The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is Matter certified.

No. ecobee SmartSensors pair only with ecobee thermostats and cameras, and Nest Temperature Sensors need a compatible Nest thermostat.

Not for heating, cooling, scheduling or remote control. ecobee's smoke alarm detection and security features need an ecobee Smart Security subscription. Google describes Nest Renew, which can shift energy use to cleaner or cheaper times, as a free service.

Often, through your utility, but amounts and eligible models vary by area. Enter your ZIP code in the ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder and read each offer's terms. Both models compared here are ENERGY STAR certified.

Both compare against a thermostat held at 72°F all year, a theoretical baseline. Google's bill-based studies show average savings of 12% on heating and 15% on cooling. Your result depends on how you set your old thermostat, your climate and your equipment.

If it's a Nest Learning Thermostat 1st gen (2011) or 2nd gen (2012), Google ended app and remote support on October 25, 2025. It still runs from the wall with its existing schedule, but it no longer gets updates or connects to the Nest or Google Home app.

Not with line-voltage baseboard heaters. Both are built for 24 V systems such as gas, oil or electric furnaces, central AC, heat pumps and boilers or radiant systems with low-voltage controls. Line-voltage baseboards need a line-voltage thermostat.
