The Best Smart Rolling Shutter and Blind Motors of 2026
Compared model by model in our Energy & Smart Home section
Searching for “smart blinds”? Our Smart Blinds & Shutters guide in the Energy & Smart Home section ranks every model on what still matters after years of ownership: annual energy cost, the EU energy label (A to G), data privacy under the EU's GDPR, replacement parts for five years and Matter support. Models that lean on marketing claims get cut; the ones built to last make the list.

Frequently asked questions
Often, yes: retrofit motors either clip onto the bead chain of a standard roller shade or replace its roller tube, and they run on a rechargeable battery. A small solar panel on the window can keep them topped up. Before buying, check the shade's width, fabric weight and tube diameter against the motor's limits. Custom motorized blinds cost more but run more quietly and look cleaner on wide or heavy windows.
Battery-powered blinds suit most homes because they need no wiring; depending on use, they need recharging every few months. Hardwired motors make more sense during a renovation or for heavy blinds and exterior rolling shutters. Adding a new circuit is a job for a licensed electrician, so hire one and check whether your area requires a permit.
Yes, motorized blinds get rid of the looped cords and chains that pose a strangulation risk to babies and young children. Older corded blinds often lack the breakaway or tensioned cords that newer designs use. If you keep a corded blind, install a cleat high out of reach and move cribs and beds away from the window.
Very little: a blind motor runs for seconds a day, so running costs come to pennies a year. For example, a 25 W motor working 30 seconds twice a day uses about 0.15 kWh a year. Standby usually matters more: 0.3 W around the clock adds roughly 2.6 kWh. Multiply the total by your rate per kWh (at an example 20 cents, that's under 60 cents a year); for battery motors, the cost is simply what it takes to recharge them.
Most often the battery is dead or the motor has lost its link to the hub or bridge. Charge it fully, then check that the bridge is within range and still connected to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. If the blind moves but stops in the wrong place, reset its upper and lower limits in the app. A motor that hums without turning may be obstructed, so check that the fabric hasn't snagged.
