My steam cleaner spits water instead of dry steam

Home Nura guide — category Steam Cleaners

Severity: moderate

Diagnosis

A steam cleaner that spits water is really producing wet steam, meaning the water condenses before it leaves the nozzle. The most common causes are an appliance that has not fully heated, an overfilled tank, or limescale that disrupts the heating.

Possible causes

  • Used before it reaches full temperature — the steam is not yet dry, so droplets of water come out of the nozzle.
  • Tank filled above the maximum — water is carried out with the steam instead of staying in the boiler.
  • Limescale in the boiler or nozzle — it reduces heating and narrows the outlet, causing uneven spitting.
  • Long or cold hose, or wet attachment — steam condenses on the way and arrives as water.

Recommended procedure

  1. 1Unplug the unit and let it cool completely before refilling; never unscrew the cap while it is hot or under pressure.
  2. 2Fill only to the maximum mark, using the type of water the manual specifies, then wait for the ready-to-use light.
  3. 3Aim the first few seconds of steam at a cloth to clear condensed water before cleaning the surface you want.
  4. 4Descale the boiler and nozzle using the method in the manual, sticking to the approved product and rinse times.
  5. 5Unroll the hose fully, avoid wet attachments, and drop to a lower steam setting if your model has one.

Repair or replace?

If water spitting returns straight after a proper descale, the boiler or valve is probably damaged. On an older unit, replacement parts often cost nearly as much as a new model, which would also be safer.

Frequently asked questions

In Europe, any steam cleaners bought new from an official reseller benefits from a legal conformity guarantee of at least two years (Directive (EU) 2019/771). This guarantee covers defects present at delivery, whenever they first manifest.

You can pick: European law puts the legal guarantee on the seller, not the manufacturer. In practice, a store return is usually faster, but the manufacturer can repair if the damage is out of warranty. Keep proof of purchase.

Our public methodology adds a Nura Score /10 penalty to any steam cleaners whose recurring failures are documented in European user feedback. A model that breaks too often never tops our charts, brand notwithstanding.

Yes, within the limits of the European "right to repair": routine maintenance tasks (cleaning, gasket replacement, calibration) never void the legal warranty. Only irreversible hardware modifications can be a problem. For a steam cleaners, any handling documented in the manufacturer's manual stays covered.

The directive imposes a two-year legal conformity guarantee, with a presumption of pre-existing defect during the first twelve months — the burden of proof is on the seller. For a steam cleaners that breaks in that window, you're entitled to free repair or replacement, no strings attached on typical use.
