My humidifier gives off an unpleasant smell
Home Nura guide — category Smart Humidifiers
Diagnosis
A smelly humidifier almost always has stagnant water in it, where bacteria, mould and limescale deposits build up. A tank left full, a clogged filter or infrequent cleaning is enough to spread a musty smell through the room.
Possible causes
- Stagnant water in the tank — left for several days, it forms a slimy film and a stale or musty smell.
- Mould or biofilm on the walls — spotted as pink or black marks, or as a slippery coating you can feel with a finger.
- Limescale on the base or mist element — it traps impurities and gives off a sharp smell during heating or misting.
- Saturated filter or wick — a worn filter, or one that never dries, holds moisture and releases a persistent odour.
Recommended procedure
- 1Unplug the unit, empty the tank and base completely, and from now on fill only with fresh water at the moment you use it.
- 2Clean the tank and base with a diluted white vinegar solution if the manual allows it, scrubbing gently with a soft brush.
- 3Rinse thoroughly with clean water until the vinegar smell has gone, then let every part air-dry before reassembling.
- 4Replace the filter or wick at the interval stated, and never run the unit without a filter if the model is designed to use one.
- 5Empty and dry the humidifier every day or before any period of non-use, and give it a deep clean once a week.
Repair or replace?
If the smell comes back quickly despite regular cleaning, or mould is ingrained in places you cannot reach, the unit is hard to keep hygienic. Replace it too if the tank is cracked or deeply scratched.

Frequently asked questions
In Europe, any smart humidifiers bought new from an official reseller benefits from a legal conformity guarantee of at least two years (Directive (EU) 2019/771). This guarantee covers defects present at delivery, whenever they first manifest.
You can pick: European law puts the legal guarantee on the seller, not the manufacturer. In practice, a store return is usually faster, but the manufacturer can repair if the damage is out of warranty. Keep proof of purchase.
Our public methodology adds a Nura Score /10 penalty to any smart humidifiers whose recurring failures are documented in European user feedback. A model that breaks too often never tops our charts, brand notwithstanding.
Yes, within the limits of the European "right to repair": routine maintenance tasks (cleaning, gasket replacement, calibration) never void the legal warranty. Only irreversible hardware modifications can be a problem. For a smart humidifiers, any handling documented in the manufacturer's manual stays covered.
The directive imposes a two-year legal conformity guarantee, with a presumption of pre-existing defect during the first twelve months — the burden of proof is on the seller. For a smart humidifiers that breaks in that window, you're entitled to free repair or replacement, no strings attached on typical use.
