Smoke alarms and the law

In England, the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations (2015, amended in 2022) require landlords to fit a smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation and a CO alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance (gas cookers excepted). Many other European countries have similar rules. Whatever the rule, the reference standard for smoke alarms is EN 14604.

A smart model is not legally required, but it adds two things a basic alarm cannot: an alert on your phone when you are away, and battery and device status in an app. Carbon monoxide needs a different sensor and a different standard, EN 50291: a smoke alarm alone does not protect you from CO.

• EN 14604 certification: the European baseline. Be wary of imported models designed for North America (UL 217), which are not certified for Europe.
